Galerie Universelle ARTOVENT

MASTERS

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION: This gallery refers to works of art called interpretation or translation, they are not copies. Interpretation or translation of masters' works is basically an emulation of great emotion but from a different mind. A good artist 'recreates' what is the original statement of the work under consideration, that is their good fortune as often as not, rather than their own intention.

Interpretation of masters is the exercise of acquisition of the skills involved in making such a work, the power of enlarging our own vocabulary of forms and ideas. Interpretation will always have a special touch, a kind of handwriting that gives an individual character to the work. Interpretation is blessing under disguise since two artists' minds are combined to create a work of art, an important fact for art lovers. An artist's interpretation is essentially a desire to pay a homage to another artist and should be interpreted also as an act of love.

Much can be said about interpretations versus copies of masters, probably the best writing on the subject was by the painter and sculptor, Michael Ayrton in his book called "THE RUDIMENTS OF PARADISE" published by "WEYBRIGHT AND TALLEY NEW YORK" first published 1971.

It has always been my intention when making an interpretation to recreate the depth of the original emotion contained in the work under consideration, and in that sense all the works represented in this gallery are an act of love or shall I say an homage to an artist. It has never been and never will be anything else.

620 X 530MM

This beautiful painting is a free interpretation of one of Claude Monet's painting (1840-1926) called 'ETRETAT' for which many versions exist. Although it is painted within the same optic as Monet, the work remains unique in its quality and should not be interpreted as a copy which it is not.

CRUCHE HOLLANDAISE(064)

OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS MOUNTED ON PREPARED BOARD 2001

SIZE FRAMED:

This oil painting was made to challenge my patience in a way I compose a picture. Hopefully better ones will follow.

OIL PAINTING ON LINEN CANVAS 1976

SIZE FRAMED:

720 X 680MM

I painted this work long time ago while away from France. I tried to emulate my liking for French landscape and this work by Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) was just right for me at the time.

MONTMARTRE(066)

OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS MOUNTED ON PREPARED BOARD 1987

SIZE FRAMED:

730 X 535MM

ITEM: 00055

You would have to be French-born from the forties and fifties to truly appreciate the works of this famous Parisian artist called Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955). Perhaps I am wrong in saying so, perhaps not, but you have to know more than a little about Paris to truly comprehend the beautiful poetry contained in his paintings. This particular work represents 'Place du Tertre', famous for its gathering of local artists all year round painting and selling their works of Parisian landscape. Incidentally, the period of this painting was the turn of last century, a time where modern art was to take a definite shape that is the one we know today.

LES VOILIERS(067)

OIL PAINTING ON STRETCHED CANVAS 1985

SIZE FRAMED:

1075 X 780MM

PRIVATE COLLECTION

ITEM: 00056

An interesting painting indeed, it is a free interpretation of one of Monet's work but with a strong influence from the artist Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) in terms of style and of course, my personal way of painting. So, we have here three paintings in one.

NAPOLI(068)

OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS MOUNTED ON PREPARED BOARD 1990

SIZE FRAMED:

810 X 640MM

ITEM: 00057

It is hard for me to put this work for sale simply because I love it too much. The original inspiration is from one of Marquet's painting kept in the Hermitage museum in Russia.

CHEVAL(069)

DRAWING ON PAPER YEAR 2000

SIZE UNFRAMED:

300 X 240MM

LEAD PENCIL

ITEM: 00058

Looking at master drawings of the Renaissance period in Italy, I came to be inspired to draw this horse. I am not usually inclined to make studies of animals, and if I do, it is with an eastern concept, not the western one. However, there is always some exception, this work is one of them.

NAPOLI PASTEL(070)

WORK ON PAPER 1987

SIZE FRAMED:

600 X 500MM

LEAD PENCIL, COLOUR PENCIL, PASTEL & INK

PRIVATE COLLECTION

ITEM: 00059

Traditionally, an artist would make a drawing of his/her subject before painting it, indeed it is a good practise although time-consuming. For this work, this is exactly what did happen before painting my work "HOMAGE TO MARQUET".

HOMAGE TO L.S.LOWRY(071)

WORK ON PAPER 1990

SIZE FRAMED:

650 X 550MM

LEAD PENCIL

ITEM: 00060

This work emulates the strength of the British-born artist L.S Lowry RA (1887-1976) concerning his artworks on the life of the industrial North of England in the first half of this century. I particularly affectionate L.S Lowry's works. Having read this marvellous biography by Shelley Rohde called "A PRIVATE VIEW OF L.S.LOWRY", I came to be inspired to make a homage to some of his works and as a result came out with a series of fine drawings, this is one of them.

PAYSAGE DE FRANCE(072)

One of my very early interpretation from the masters, in this instance, the french artist Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), a fairly well-known painting from the impressionist collection.

STILL LIFE(073)

OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS 1976

600 X 500MM

This is one of my very early painting, at the time when I was trying different style and certainly Paul Cezanne's works were a great source of inspiration and teaching. This particular work emulates one of his still life.
